Energy Modeling in Schematic Design

As energy codes continue to raise the bar, energy modeling is becoming a fundamental design service. Recent introductions of web-based, real-time modeling tools allow for quick analysis of energy impacts during programming and early schematic design.

This workshop provides architects with an understanding of how cloud computing and advancements in technology allow us to do energy modeling in the pre-design and schematic stages to help drive effective decision-making.  A case study example using one tool will illustrate the types of design questions early energy analysis can inform, including budget and space planning constraints. A key aspect of this session is to reveal how to maximize lucrative utility incentives that are often times underutilized.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the value early energy analysis provides to the design process.
  • Compare and contrast whole building energy analysis results and how they inform design decisions.
  • Understand how decisions made during early design impact the life-long energy use of a building.
  • Interpret the environmental and financial information provided by energy modeling results.
