Movable Bridge Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Construction Institute at the University of Hartford are offering a 1-day seminar for practicing engineers on the topic of movable bridges. This seminar will cover the civil and structural engineering considerations of designing movable bridges.

(NOTE: this session does not cover mechanical or electrical design).
It is assumed that course participants will have a background in structural engineering, but not specifically in the field of movable bridges.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the basics of movable bridges, both highway and railroad.
  • Discuss the current AREMA and AASHTO code requirements regarding movable bridges.
  • Learn the civil and structural engineering process of designing movable bridges.
  • Learn the advantages and disadvantages of 3 types of movable bridges (vertical-lift, horizontal swing and bascule).

The seminar will include photos of movable bridges and bridge components to better illustrate the lecture material. Each student will receive copies of portions of the AREMA and AASHTO specification sections relating to movable bridges.

Who Should Attend

  • Civil engineers with a good structural background, but not necessarily movable bridge experience.
  • Consultants, contractors and municipal and state officials who supervise or review movable bridge design and construction activities.
  • Students interested in the subject of movable bridges.
