The Construction Institute (CI) is proud to announce a new grant-funded project: developing Protocols for Best Practices in Project Communication. The project is sponsored and funded by a $10,000 grant from the American Arbitration Association (AAA).  The AAA, is a not-for-profit organization with offices throughout the U.S. For nearly half a century, the AAA has set the standard for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the construction industry. Through its National Construction Dispute Resolution Committee (NCDRC), the AAA has worked closely with the industry to develop the Construction Industry Arbitration Rules and Mediation Procedures and other project specific approaches to prevent and manage conflict. The funded project is in keeping with the AAA’s core mission to  help the construction industry avoid conflicts on the work site, and to resolve disputes quickly to avoid project delays and costly litigation fees.

The purpose of the grant is to engage the expertise and experience of the CI’s members, who represent all aspects of the industry, to develop a detailed protocol for best practices in project communication and information transfer that covers the period from concept through design and construction to operations and that works from the boardroom to the field. The result will be a manual that will be made available to the industry to provide a practical set of tools that will improve efficiency and outcome while reducing risk and conflict through the process. The protocols will be designed to work with projects of varying complexity and differing project delivery methods. The project is scheduled to begin February 1st and conclude by the end of this calendar year.
