Institute Menbers host Construction Issues Class at University of Hartford

Published Mon, Feb 9, 2009

The Construction Institute, as part of the Institute's "Future of the Workforce" initiative, has partnered with the University of Hartford to present a "Construction Issues" class to students enrolled in the College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture (CETA).

The one credit class is held each Spring Semester on Friday afternoons and features sessions taught exclusively by individuals from Institute Member Firms. Each week the students are offered the opportunity to visit a Member's job site or company offices, or attend classroom sessions presented by an Institute Member on a construction related topic.

So far this semester the class has visited the offices of Schoenhardt Architects and inspected mechanical sites around the University that had been outfitted with equipment manufactured by Trane. A recent classroom session featured representatives from the Institute's Young Professionals Council talking about their transition from school to work.

The class, in its fifth year, is administered by Student Initiatives chair, Kent Goetjen of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Inc. and his assistant, Jackie Horner. University of Hartford Professors David Pines (School of Engineering) and James Fuller (School of Architecture) supervise the class sessions, which usually have between 15 and 25 students.

The Construction Issues class allows students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and allows Member firms the opportunity to gain exposure to future industry participants.

The Construction Institute provides a unique benefit to its members - an opportunity to recruit its future workforce while making a difference in the future of the industry.

Firms that are interested in becoming involved with this program or who would like to be a part of any of the Institute's other "Future of the Workforce" initiatives should contact Kent Goetjen at (860) 241-7009 or h.kent.goetjen@us.pwc.com.
